The Old Grandstand At Ak-Sar-Ben
A Relic Of Racing's Past

During my travels in the Midwest in late June, I took this picture of the abandoned grandstand at Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, NE. The track opened September 14, 1920 (9/14 is also MY birthday!) and went dark for good in 1995 after long career as one of the Midwest's top thoroughbred facilities. This is where Hall-of-Fame trainer Jack Van Berg got started and where 1935 Triple Crown winner Omaha is buried . -- John

Little Kleo Retired After All Too Brief Racing Career

The disappointing news came days after Little Kleo's unexpected dismal performance last Thursday at Bay Meadows. A nuclear scan on a suspicious area on one of his front legs showed a serious tendon tear and --after consultation with veterinarians and trainers-- the decision was made to retire him after a three race career and retrain him as a riding or pleasure horse.
